a place to call home for the summer

After 16 years of camping in different sites around the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, through generous donations, we have acquired a lovely property where we can base our operations in Alaska.

This location is perfectly situated on a dirt road approximately five miles from the town of McCarthy, right in the heart of the Park. A pristine, ice-cold creek runs through the middle of it. This glacial water supplies drinking water for our neighbors and will be a ready source for fresh water for us too.

MAJOR GAME CHANGER!!!

Our Home Base will empower us to do things we have never done before!

  • run more than one trip at a time

  • power our operations with solar energy

  • streamline our itineraries (easier travel logistics between expeditions!)

  • upgrade storage of our gear

Because of your generosity

Because of your support, we have purchased many of the materials for the construction of our dream Home Base, including:

  • solar power

  • guide house with bunks and kitchen

  • four 20 x 20 lean to’s

  • a covered pavilion with a huge fire pit and amphitheater seating

With the support of over 15,000 of you in the span of just 24 hours, plus an anonymous donation of $25,000, the preliminary construction of our BK2AK Home Base has begun. Please help us continue this project and meet our goal to open next summer:

  • Preliminary construction began in June 2023.

  • GOAL: launch the BK2AK Home Base in Summer 2025!

Adam Tschappat, one of the most skilled Alaskans anywhere in the entire state has surveyed the land, drafted the designs, and he has begun building. He has been joined by full-time, world-class, classical guitarist and part-time expert builder Jurgen Ogrodnik. We are grateful for these two wonderful craftsmen and supporters of our programs.
